Design I

Contrast and Grouping

Go on a walk. Look for variety in the world. Notice how “things” that look completely different are visually pushed together. On your walk you might encounter interesting contrasts of texture, value, size, shape, etc.  In your sketchbook take note of moments of contrast that interest you. Write descriptively. Make descriptive drawings and/or textural rubbings. Take snapshots with your phone. Gather information.

After your walk, decide on which "found contrast" would serve as the best subject matter. Do this by first sketching and exploring the "things" separately - making evident their unique qualities. Then do many thumbnail sketches that explore the two "things" together in different compositions. Explore the possibilities.

Create a composition that maximizes the contrast between two “things” but is still unified.  Unity can be achieved through the use of grouping, repetition and a well-balanced composition.
To create this project you can draw representationally, collage with cut paper, collage with textural rubbings or paint.  Any method that we've explored in previous projects is acceptable. (Choose only one technique for this project. Do not try to merge multiple techniques).
